GPA Education Center

Everything you need to know about the numbers that define your academic journey.

Academic Credits

Credits represent the weightage of a subject. A 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course.

SGPA

Semester Grade Point Average. It measures your performance in a single semester/term.

CGPA

Cumulative Grade Point Average. The average of all your SGPAs across all semesters.

SGPA vs CGPA: The Difference

Scope
SGPA: One Semester CGPA: Entire Degree
Sensitivity
SGPA: Highly volatile (one bad grade ruins it) CGPA: Stabilizes over time (harder to change)

Technical Reference: The Math

SGPA Formula

Σ(Credits × Grade Points) / Σ(Total Credits)

Every subject is multiplied by its weight (credits) and then averaged.

CGPA Formula

Σ(SGPA × Sem Credits) / Σ(Total Credits)

A weighted average of all your SGPAs based on total credits per semester.

Most Top companies (TCS, Google, etc.) require a minimum CGPA of 7.0 or 7.5 to even apply.

Higher Studies

Global universities prioritize CGPA for MS/MBA admissions and fully-funded scholarships.

Pro-Tips for Success

  • Focus on High Credits: Subjects with 4 credits impact your GPA much more than 2-credit ones.
  • Early Target Planning: Use the Required SGPA tool at the start of the sem to know your goal.
  • Internal Marks Matter: High internals (CIA) make it much easier to get 'S' or 'A+' grades.

Common Pitfalls

  • Neglecting Attendance: Attendance below 60% triggers RA. For 61-75%, a Condonation Fee is required to write exams.
  • Mixing SGPA/CGPA: SGPA is for one sem; CGPA is the aggregate. Don't confuse them!
  • Flat Averaging: CGPA isn't a simple average of SGPAs; it depends on the total credits each sem.
